History of the Community

All 5 communities are so-called “clearing settlements” that emerged at the end of the 16th Century and in the first half of the 17th Century. The reason for the founding of both Glashütten bei Schlaining and Günseck was a glass factory. The factory required large quantities of wood as fuel. Holzschlag was founded as a lumberjack settlement. Up to the beginning of the 20th Century, the burning of lime and the production of charcoal were the main sources of income for the residents of Ober- and Unterkohlstätten.
